Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What is Purista?
Purista is a durable antimicrobial treatment, which helps keep products cleaner and fresher for longer.
  2. Which products is it used in?
At the moment, Purista is being used in clothing and home textiles. We expect other product applications to follow.
  3. What benefits does it bring?
Purista helps to control the growth of bacteria arising in everyday use. If uncontrolled, bacteria can multiply rapidly, producing unpleasant odours and, sometimes, degradation or discolouring of the product. Controlling bacteria helps keep the product fresh and comfortable for longer.
  4. Doesn't regular washing do this?
Yes, but many products, such as socks, shirts and even bed linen, are affected more quickly than washing cycles provide for. Purista controls bacteria whilst you're using the product, which washing can't. In addition, our research has shown that products which offer increased performance and comfort are becoming more popular for people with busy lifestyles. Various changes in lifestyles and washing practices over recent years mean bacteria are increasingly present at higher levels on textiles and lead us to expect sustained demand for Purista treatment to counter their effects. These changes include washing at lower temperatures with less water, the preference for more delicate and non or minimum machine washable fabrics, and, in hotels, the frequent request to use linens longer to reduce environmental impact. Purista is the ideal response to these factors. It keeps textiles fresher for longer by controlling the growth of bacteria arising in general use.
  5. Does that mean I can stop washing to keep textiles fresh?
We wouldn't recommend that you stop laundering clothes, but you may be able to wash them less often or at a lower temperature, making savings for you and the environment. It's worth remembering that producers of washing machines, detergents and fabrics have co-operated to bring down wash temperatures and rinse cycle water volumes, which saves energy and water. This kinder treatment also means that more delicate fabrics can be machine-washed. However, as lower temperatures and rinse volumes favour the survival of bacteria, Purista compensates for these changes in washing practices, making it increasingly useful.
  6. What is the main ingredient in Purista?
It's an antimicrobial agent known as PHMB, which is already widely used in many products, including swimming pool sanitizers, contact lens solutions, medical products and wet wipes.
  7. Is Purista like Triclosan?
PHMB and Triclosan are both antimicrobial agents, but they work in completely different ways. Purista binds naturally to the textile and tests have shown rates of loss to be extremely low. This ensures bacteria naturally found on the skin are not affected.
  8. Does Purista have any harmful effects on the environment?
Extensive testing has been undertaken to assess the environmental impact of Purista treated textiles. At the levels used in these products, Purista has not shown any adverse effects on the environment. Purista-treated cotton will biodegrade in landfill conditions at a slightly slower rate than untreated cotton.
  9. How do I know if a product contains Purista?
Because it's a colourless liquid, you won't be able to see or smell Purista. Sometimes the product will have the Purista logo on the packaging, or have a Purista tag attached to it. Some manufacturers have chosen just to mention that their products have been treated with an antimicrobial, without mentioning it by name.
  10. Does Purista make fabrics smell different?
Purista isn't a fragrance and doesn't have any odour, so you can't smell it. But you will be able to notice the absence of unpleasant smells usually caused by bacteria and other microorganisms.
  11. Does it wash out?
Under the normal washing conditions specified on fabric care labels, Purista will remain effective over the practical lifetime of the article. It would wash out only in extreme wash conditions, which would also permanently damage the fabric. Purista binds onto the fabric naturally, which makes it very durable.
  12. Can I tumble dry or bleach textiles containing Purista?
Tumble drying and colour-safe bleaches are both fine.
  13. Would Purista affect the softness or absorbency of my towels?
Not at all. Towels treated with Purista are just as soft and absorbent as untreated ones.
  14. Is Purista effective against dust mites?
This hasn't been tested, but we believe it is unlikely that Purista would have any effect against dust mites.
  15. Is it irritating to the skin, especially for babies and children?
When used at the correct levels, Purista is unlikely to irritate even the most sensitive skin. Manufacturers using Purista are given advice on the correct use of it. In fact over 40 million pairs of Purista treated socks have been sold by our customers every year for the last 6 years, and without any reported evidence of skin irritation.
  16. Could bacteria build up resistance to the treatment?
It would be very difficult for bacteria to develop a resistance to Purista. We have been using its main ingredient, PHMB, in swimming pool products for over 20 years, and never identified an organism which had developed a resistance to it.
